Viking history with a urban pulse

Renowned streetart artist Martin Whatson took Horten with stencils and graffiti boxes, and within a day Horten got a brand new viking mural. In Vestfold, vibrant city life is combined with world-renowned history. Here you are close to everything from Viking history to The world's end.

Vestfold is particularly rich in Viking history and it is no coincidence that precisely Viking and Viking ships were chosen as the theme of Martin Whatson's mural.

The whole of Vestfold was a center of power in the Scandinavian Viking Age, and several of the world's largest archaeological finds from the Viking Age have been made here. At Midgard Viking Center and Borrehaugene you can take part in the story and be a true Viking for a day. The Viking Center has several exhibitions and events throughout the year, its own Viking festival and the popular heavy metal festival Midgardsblot that draws audiences from all over the world.

Gildehallen at Midgard Viking Center is worth a visit on its own. Gildehallen is a reconstruction of the vikings' banqueting halls.

Vibrant cities in Vestfold

The cultural life in Vestfold does not stop at Vikings. The cities are filled with concerts, festivals, theatre, shows and various performances throughout the year. The short distance between the cities makes it easy to get around. Close to the city you will find the archipelago. Take a stroll on the coastal paths, walk along the beaches, polished rocks and enjoy majestic views of the horizon at The world’s end or Mølen.

There are several places worth visiting if you are interested in art, such as Munch’s house in Åsgårdstrand, Haugar Vestfold Art Museum, Midtåsen sculpture park or smaller galleries throughout the cities. If you are looking for more street art, several artists have visited Vestfold over the last years and transformed buildings with their creative art.
