    Coastal Trail Horten–Åsgårdstrand

Walk the coastal trail from Horten to Åsgårdstrand, past beaches, Viking heritage and Oslofjord views.

The coastal trail from Falkensten in Horten to Åsgårdstrand is approximately 13 kilometres long. The route follows sections of the Oslofjord coastline, passing woodland, marinas, beaches and historic sites. Along the way, you can explore Karljohansvern and the Borre burial mounds before finishing in Åsgårdstrand. Walk the full distance or choose a shorter section.

    From Falkensten towards Karljohansvern
Starting at Falkensten, follow the pedestrian and cycle path along Falkenstensveien before continuing towards Kjølhaleskogen. The route leads through woodland and residential areas towards Tordenskjoldbukta and Selviken marina. Some sections follow established paths, while others run close to the shoreline. At Karljohansvern, you reach one of Horten's most important historic sites. This former naval base has military buildings, museums, green spaces and walking paths alongside the Horten Canal. If you have time, explore the historic grounds of Karljohansvern or take the separate circular walk around the area.

    Along Horten harbour and Rørestrand
From Karljohansvern, continue south along the Horten Canal, past Fyllinga and towards the harbour. The route passes Horten guest harbour, the ferry terminal and Strandparken before continuing towards Steinsnes and Rørestrand. With the Oslofjord close by, there are several places to pause and enjoy the views. In summer, you can combine the walk with a swim where conditions are suitable.

Through Borre and its Viking heritage
South of Rørestrand, the coastal trail continues through woodland and along the shore towards Borre. Here you pass the Borre burial mounds, one of Norway's most significant Viking Age burial sites. Nearby, Midgard Viking Centre offers exhibitions and activities exploring the region's Viking history. This is a good place to allow extra time if you enjoy history. Check the museum's opening hours before planning a visit.

    The final stretch to Åsgårdstrand
From Borre, the trail continues south along gravel tracks and woodland paths close to the fjord.
Approaching Åsgårdstrand, the route follows Edvard Munchs gate, passing the area around Edvard Munch's former home. From here, continue towards the guest harbour and Badeparken, a waterfront park with a sandy beach and open grassy areas. It is a pleasant place to finish your walk, whether you want to sit by the sea, enjoy a picnic or explore Åsgårdstrand before returning.

Walk the full route or choose a shorter section
The trail can be followed in either direction, but the full distance is a point-to-point walk. Plan your return journey if you intend to walk from Falkensten to Åsgårdstrand. Surfaces include pedestrian and cycle paths, gravel tracks and woodland trails. Some stretches follow the shoreline, where conditions can be slippery after rain or during colder weather. Walking is possible in different seasons when conditions allow. For cycling, follow National Cycle Route 1 and consult a dedicated cycle map rather than assuming every shoreline path is suitable. For more walking ideas, explore Coastal trails in Horten or continue south along the coastal trail towards Tønsberg.
