Just over one hour’s drive from Oslo or only 20 minutes from Tønsberg, this historic site offers visitors a unique glimpse into the life and work of one of the world’s most famous artists, Edvard Munch.

Surrounded by peaceful streets lined with white wooden houses, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Oslofjord, creating the same serene setting that once inspired Munch himself.

Discover Munch’s House and Studio

Munch’s House is situated near the well-known Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand, close to the marina. As you walk past the hotel and along the harbor, you’ll find the house and studio set slightly uphill, surrounded by lush green lawns.

Alternatively, take a stroll along Edvard Munch Street, a picturesque road filled with charming gardens and classic Norwegian coastal architecture that oozses that Southern Norway charm.

At the museum, grab a seat overlooking the sea. That shoreline below? It’s the same one Munch painted over and over again – and loved to swim in.

Edvard Munchs Life in Åsgårdstrand

Edvard Munch (1863–1944), one of the pioneers of modern expressionism, spent many summers in Åsgårdstrand starting in 1889. It was here that he created several of his most iconic works, including:

Munch lived a relatively carefree summer life in this coastal town and was well-liked by the local community. The peaceful surroundings and emotional atmosphere of the area became central themes in his art.

He purchased the house in 1898 and owned it until his death in 1944. Today, the museum preserves the home exactly as it was during Munch’s lifetime, offering an authentic and intimate experience.

Although the original studio building was demolished, a new studio has been constructed on the same site, maintaining the historical significance of the location.

This isn’t a polished museum experience. It’s the real deal: Munch’s actual summer retreat, preserved exactly as he left it.

Munch’s House is open to visitors from May through September, with opening hours varying depending on the season.

Stay in Munchs Favourite Coastal Town

Make it a proper visit – spend the night at Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand, a short walk from Munchs House.

The hotel offers something special: the Munch Menu, a tasting experience built around the artist’s favourite local dishes. If you’re a group of 8 or more you can book this dining experience ahead (minimum 48 hours in advance) -but it’s definetly worth it.
