Castle Rock Tower in Tønsberg is an 1888 landmark surrounded by medieval castle ruins.
Castle Rock Tower (Slottsfjelltårnet) is one of Tønsberg's most recognisable landmarks. Standing 17 metres tall above the town centre, the stone tower was completed in 1888 to commemorate the town's millennium celebrations. Visit for views across Tønsberg and the Oslofjord, and explore the remains of Tunsberghus, one of medieval Norway's most important royal castles.
A historic tower overlooking Tønsberg
When Castle Rock Tower is open, visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views of the town, harbour and surrounding landscape. Inside the tower, you can discover historical exhibits, including a cross from the medieval St Mary's Church and bricks recovered from the castle ruins. The tower also bears the signatures of three Norwegian kings: Haakon VII, Olav V and Harald V. Outside stands a bronze model by artist Cato Enger, illustrating what medieval Tønsberg may once have looked like.
The royal castle of Tunsberghus
The tower is impressive, but the surrounding ruins tell an even older story.
During the Middle Ages, the great royal fortress of Tunsberghus stood on this hill. Under King Haakon Haakonsson, the castle was strengthened with stone walls, defensive towers and buildings associated with royal power. Today, you can explore the remains of St Michael's Church, the royal hall and parts of the fortress. The hill was the setting for dramatic events during Norway's medieval civil wars, when rival groups fought for control of the kingdom. The fortress gradually lost its importance and was attacked and burned in 1503. It was never rebuilt.
Walk through centuries of history
Castle Rock is more than a viewpoint. Walking paths lead past ancient stone walls, grassy areas and viewpoints overlooking Tønsberg. You can enjoy the castle grounds even when the tower itself is closed. To discover more about the medieval town, visit the Slottsfjells Museum at the foot of the hill. Its exhibitions explore the town's history, the Viking Age and the Oseberg discovery. You can also continue to the ruins of Olav's Church in central Tønsberg, the site of Norway's only securely documented medieval round church.
