    Berger museum

At Berger Museum in Berger, discover textile industry history, Berger blankets and historic patterns.

Berger Museum is located in the former Fossekleven textile factory in Berger, between Sande and Svelvik. Discover the story of the famous Berger blankets, textile design and the people who helped establish one of Norway's best-preserved industrial communities. The museum shares its premises with Fossekleiva Cultural Centre.

The story behind the Berger blankets
From 1879 to 2003, Berger was an important centre of Norwegian textile production. The factories produced blankets, woollen throws and fabrics for clothing and furniture.

The museum's main exhibition features original pattern sketches, fabric samples and finished textiles. Its collection documents more than 3,000 different designs, revealing how patterns, colours and weaving techniques developed over generations.

Discover how drawings and design ideas became finished fabrics, and how Norwegian and European design influenced the textiles produced in Berger.

    A community built around industry
Berger grew around its textile factories, which shaped both working life and everyday life in the community. The historic factories, workers' houses and other buildings remain important features of the area.

The museum tells the stories of factory workers, owners and the development of the local community. It offers an insight into how textile production helped shape an entire industrial town.

From textile factory to cultural centre
Today, Berger Museum shares its historic factory building with Fossekleiva Cultural Centre. The former industrial premises have become a venue for art, culture and local history.

A permanent exhibition also explores Berger's transformation from an industrial community into a centre for art and culture, and the people who gave the former factory a new purpose.
In the same building, Café Jebsen serves lunch, coffee and cakes. There is also a shop offering textiles inspired by historic Berger patterns, among other products.
