Take Care of Vestfold
Last updated:Check out our tips for taking care of Vestfold.
Exploring the archipelago and coastal towns of the Vestfold region is great fun for young and old, both on foot, by bike, car, train, boat or kayak. When you reach the coast, you can wander along beaches, between reeds and sheltered coves with views to the horizon.
Vestfold has a total shoreline of 980 kilometres and 1407 islets and skerries. Whether you prefer short or long walks, you can explore our beautiful coastline all year round. And it’s completely free.
All we ask in return is that you take care of nature and the ocean while you’re here.

1. Enjoy your trip – follow marked trails🧭
- Follow marked trails on your hike.
- Avoid leaving traces in nature, such as tents on soft and vulnerable ground or rock outcrops.
2. Follow the campfire rules🔥
- Be aware of the general campfire ban from April 15th to September 15th. During this period, it is not permitted to light fires or barbecue in forests and other unspoiled natural areas.
- NEVER light a fire on bare rock or against a cliff face. This is strictly prohibited. This includes disposable grills. The heat can cause the rock to crack and become permanently damaged.
- Consider the risk of wildfires and wind conditions before lighting a fire.
- Use established areas for bonfires and barbecues.
- Bring your own firewood – do not break branches or twigs from trees.
- Keep extinguishing materials close at hand and make sure the fire does not get too large.
- Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
3. Bring your binoculars and camera, but respect the plants and wildlife🐾
- Remember to keep your dog on a leash when leashes are required.
- Do not disturb bird nests or nesting areas
- Avoid picking wild flowers
4. Do you drive a car? Drive carefully and only park on assigned parking spaces🅿️
- Be wary of the surrounding nature and park only where parking is available.
- Vestfold has many narrow roads and lots of cyclists. Drive carefully! When approaching a cyclist on a narrow road, reduce your speed.
- Give plenty of distance: When passing a cyclist, give sufficient distance. Remember that cyclists can be vulnerable in traffic. Wait for a safe opportunity to pass, especially if the road is narrow.
5. And be kind. Don’t throw rubbish in nature🚯
- Take all your rubbish with you when you leave an area.
- If there are no rubbish bins nearby, take your rubbish home.
- If you see rubbish along the trail – pick it up and throw it away or take it home.
